Decent Work & Livelihoods Competence Centre

Global economy & precarious working conditions

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka, comdu.it, has become more involved in tackling challenges in the global supply chain. For instance, economic mismanagement and the termination of orders from the Global North led to a ripple effect that affected production sites and the workforce in Sri Lanka as well as neighbouring counterparts in South Asia.

Recent geopolitical events have further triggered the momentum of mandatory human rights due diligence that has also been growing in Europe. Exploratory discussions between comdu.it and its partners put the topic of labour power and poverty in the export industry into the spotlight. Specifically, we want to uncover issues connected with precarious livelihoods in a variety of sector-specific and country-specific contexts and develop actionable recommendations for various stakeholder groups. This will be done through our Decent Work Competence Centre (CC).

The Decent Work & Livelihoods Competence Centre is an infrastructure within comdu.it dedicated to knowledge transfer, interdisciplinary, standardisation, and collaborative approaches for tackling supply chain vulnerabilities.

The focus is initially placed on the Sri Lankan apparel sector, followed by tea and other exported products in 2023, and then involves stepwise expansion to other countries in South Asia in 2024.
